In Western Australia, more than 3,000 babies are born too soon – approximately 1 in 12 pregnancies ends preterm.
Some 20,000 babies are born in South Australia ever year, and approximately 2000 babies are born preterm.
There are just over 60,000 births a year in Queensland and the most recent data show that 9.3% are born preterm.
In 2017, 7.4% of all births in New South Wales were born preterm.
In 2018, 7% of births at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children in were born preterm.
In 2016, the rate of preterm birth in Victoria was 8.3% – representing approximately 6,600 babies. The majority of these babies were born between 32 and 36 weeks.
Tasmania has the highest preterm birth rate in the country at 11.3% of all births.
