In Western Australia, more than 3,000 babies are born too soon – approximately 1 in 12 pregnancies ends preterm.
Some 20,000 babies are born in South Australia ever year, and approximately 2000 babies are born preterm.
In 2021 more 8.9 % of babies in Queensland were born preterm in 2020/2021.
In 2017, 7.4% of all births in New South Wales were born preterm.
In 2023, there were more than 6100 births in the ACT.
In 2016, the rate of preterm birth in Victoria was 8.3% – representing approximately 6,600 babies. The majority of these babies were born between 32 and 36 weeks.
In 2023, Tasmania saw a 2.1% increase in births, with 5,850 births recorded.
