About Dr Lindsay Edwards:
- Dr Lindsay Edwards (MBBS, FRANZCOG, CMFM, DDU) is an Obstetrician and Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital. A passionate Tasmanian, Lindsay studied at the University of Tasmania before undertaking specialist training in Tasmania and Victoria. She undertook further training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the Mercy Hospital for Women and Sunshine Hospital, with the aim of being the first Tasmanian subspecialist in this area. In 2017 Lindsay returned to Hobart to establish a Maternal Fetal Medicine service for the women of Tasmania.
- Lindsay’s experience lies in the care of high-risk pregnancies, and she has a special interest in preterm birth prevention, fetal growth restriction, obstetric ultrasound, and stillbirth prevention. While clinical work is her main passion, she is becoming increasingly involved in research in her desire to improve outcomes for the women and babies of the state.
- Alongside her involvement in the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance, Lindsay is the current Chair of the Tasmanian Regional Committee (RANZCOG), and the Chair of the organising committee for the 2020 RANZCOG Annual Scientific Meeting.
Why does preventing early birth matter to you?
“Prematurity is the leading cause of death and disability in children under the age of 5 years in countries like Australia and I have seen firsthand the devastating effect on families of babies born too soon. Sadly, many babies are born so early that we are unable to even offer resuscitation, and for those who do survive, I’ve also seen the hurdles that these babies have to overcome in the NICU, and the lifelong health consequences that can occur from being born too soon. Tasmania has had the highest preterm birth rate in the country for a few years now, and I am determined to find out why, and to work tirelessly with my colleagues to bring the preterm birth rate back down to the lowest in Australia.”
The Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance is working to safely lower the rate of early birth across Australia.
